Friend and backer of the Rayner Fund, Sir Jimmy Savile, died yesterday at the age of 84. Tributes poured in for the DJ, famed for his tracksuits, jangly gold jewellery and cigars, and catchphrases such as ‘Now then, now then’ and ‘How’s about that, then?’, who died just days before his 85th birthday.

In 1958 he became a DJ on pirate radio station Radio Luxembourg, later joining Radio 1. But he will perhaps be best remembered for Jim’ll Fix It, the long-running series he devised and presented which saw children write in to have their wishes granted. Sir Jimmy was a guest at many a Dave Rayner Dinner and will be missed by us all.

A Blog from Richard Meadows:

My First Victory:

Crach GP, Morbihan France. April 2010.

Back in April I managed to get my first Victory of the season, At the Crach GP in Morbihan France. The race started fast, I was with a group of 14 riders forming a breakaway 30 miles from the finish, the break stayed together and on the finishing lap with 1km to go I attacked winning the race by 5 seconds. Since then I have had success in various other races including the Peter Bissell Memorial race in Quimper were I finished 9th. Hopefully there’ll be many more to come.

It is thanks to the Dave Rayner Fund that it was possible for me to race in France this year, and make an attempt at becoming a professional cyclist.

A Blog from Matt Jones:

First win of the year.

I’ve managed to get my first win of the year, with a stage win in the tour du Mortainais stage race in France. I won the second stage, after being in the early break. I managed to win the stage in a 6 man sprint taking the win by around 3 bike lengths and pushing me up to 4th overall.

I also enjoyed more success during the stage race by winning the meilleur grimpeur on the first stage where I finished 8th as well. I defended the MG till the end of the stage race and after trying to break into the top 3 overall on the final stages I ended up in 4th overall but I did have the bonus of being first espoir overall.

Well done Matt - Keep it up!

A Blog from David Nichols:

Hello Everyone,

The phrase ‘a new dawn, a new day’ is often used to symbolize how the passing of one day into another can allow for the turning of a new leaf and to start a fresh. This, in its metaphorical, but also quite literal sense (having woken at 4 am to catch the ferry this morning) seems to be what is unfolding in front of me right now, as today marks a new era in my life. At 18, i have taken the decision to move to Belgium, in an attempt to persue my dream of becoming a professional cyclist.

However, I am under no illusions about what lays ahead of me, and the ultimate dream of becoming professional is just that at the moment – a dream. There lies years of hard work, suffering, pain, and obviously a little luck along the way, before this can truly become a realistic goal, but now i’m here and i feel that i am ready to give this my best shot!

With the much needed assistance of Patrick Schils, I was able to join WielerTeam Van Eyck Sport Wambeek, for the 2010 season alongside fellow rider Dom Schils and several other Belgian riders. My first race will be an interclub on this Sunday (7th of March), the “Brussels-Zepperen“. With a large, high quality field of 200 riders, this is a tough first race, but I hope to show some of the early season form I hope to have built through the winter . My next race will be a kermesse in Adinkerke on Wednesday, with a lot more Kermesse style racing to come over the remainder of the month.

This season i will be racing on a fantastic Cannondale Super 6 Ultegra, part-sponsered by Chelmer Cycles. The bike has been upgraded from stock with new Zipp 404 wheels, as well as Easton EA 70 bars and gore ride-on cables. With such a quality bike, and coupled with the professional (sometime pedantic) build that Chelmer Cycles are known for, the result is a faultless all out race machine which is ready for anything the rough Belgian terrain can throw at it!

It is true to say that without the generous support of the dave rayner fund I would not be racing in Belgium this year. The supprt and financial backing the fund offers has been a fundamental in my decision to race abroad, and is the driving force behind me for my time in Begliam.

Well i guess thats about all for now, until next time...

  • A Blog from Dave Rayner Fund supported rider Alice Monger-Godfrey (23/12/09):

    Hi Eveyone,

After spending the whole road season and much of the winter in Oudenaarde, Belgium it was finally time to come home for Christmas to see friends and family. I cant believe how quickly a year has gone and its nice to look back and reflect on 2009 as 2010 is so close!

With the help of The Dave Rayner Fund I was able to race and stay for the full season in Belgium. I have been racing with a fantastic Belgium team called The Sprinters Malderen that look after me very well, and its a bonus that they dont speak much English so I can practice my Flemish :) I will be staying with them for the 2010 season and look forward to doing bigger and better races with our new and improved racing calender! After a year in Oudenaarde I have settled in well and attend Dutch lessons every Monday and Wednesday to try and make myself a little less of an 'outsider', and fit into the Belgium way of life; this includes many hot chocolates! I had a good 2009 season with a win in Belgium and many top 10 places however, next year I am looking to build on these results and try and get as many wins and podium places as possible!

I am currently training hard for the next season because they do say all is won and lost in winter. I have been doing swimming and running as well as cycling, which has been a bonus as the weather is pretty tough with all the snow and ice. Although it didnt stop me yesterday Mountain Biking in the snow for 3 hours. I have been doing track training too, and did my first race in over 2 years last month at the Gent track, and was 4th in the Scratch race. I really enjoyed it so I will be going back for more in January!

I attended the Dave Rayner Dinner in November which was an amazing evening, meeting our inspirations; Bradley Wiggins, Russel Downing, and all the fantastic people supporting us to follow our dreams in racing full time abroad. So much was donated that night and I have to say a big thank you to everyone who gave a donation as without you, I could not be fulfilling my ambition to become a professional cyclist. I am lucky enough to have Dave Rayner's support next year and am hugely grateful.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and I look forward to telling you all my experiences and results in 2010!

MORE THAN A DREAM is now available - Paul Greenhalgh

More Than a Dream tells the story of a year in the lives of young British riders Tom Barras and Graham Briggs, as with the assistance of the Dave Rayner Fund, they lived their dream of becoming professional cyclists. It recounts the highs and lows of competition, as well as the challenging and the mundane elements of being a full-time sportsman.

Part sporting journal and part travelogue, the book takes in a variety of locations and people, as it recounts the events of a year spent on the road. However, more than anything, the book is the story of ordinary people following their own personal star and in the process doing extraordinary things.

The book will initially be available via mail order directly from PAG Solutions at the price of £7.50 plus £1.50 post and package.

Cheques made payable to PAG Solutions should be sent to 75 Bolton St, Ramsbottom, Bury, Lancs, BL0 9HY.
